Kratom Leaves

Kratom Leaves

Kratom is banned in Australia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand but is legal in many countries, including the United States and Europe.

Kratom leaves are used in tea and can have a stimulant or sedative effect depending on the dosage used. In the past, it has been used as a folk medicine in Southeast Asia as a painkiller or recreational drug but it has also been used to treat diarrhea and opium addiction.

Effect:

Kratom is unique because it differs depending on the dosage level. Lower doses have a stimulating effect, making an individual feel more alert, talkative, sexual and energetic. At higher dosages, Kratom produces pleasurable and euphoric effects of sedation. Kratom effects last on average about 4-6 hours, but the residual lingering effects may last longer. It's advised that when taking Kratom avoid potential dangerous activities like driving.

What is Kratom?

Kratom is a tree home to Thailand and other areas of Southeast Asia . Kratom also goes by the names krathom, ithang, kakuam, or thom. Coming from the same botanical family as the coffee tree, many of the effects kratom users experience are similar to that of coffee drinkers, depending on how kratom is taken. For example, a tea made with kratom leaves often has the entheogenic effect of a stimulant like coffee. It should be noted, however, that larger doses act as a sedative instead.

Kratom History

Kratom leaves have been used as folk medicine in Southeast Asia . It has also been used throughout history as a pain killer or recreational drug. Kratom is banned in Australia , Malaysia , Myanmar and Thailand (in particular, Thailand has reported cases of Kratom abuse when not taken responsibly). However, it is legal in many countries, including the United States and Europe .

Entheogenic Effects of Kratom

Kratom's effects vary depending on dose. For example, a low to moderate dose will usually act as a stimulant, much like drinking coffee. A high dose however, acts as a sedative. The reason is because the active alkaloids of kratom have both stimulant and sedative properties.

  • As a stimulant: In small to medium size doses (2-15 grams) kratom makes your mind more alert and increases your physical and sexual energy. People experience effects such as being more talkative and sociable when using kratom.
  • As a sedative: Larger doses (16-25 grams) will leave you less sensitive to physical or emotional pain and bring about a feeling of calm. In some cases however, people experience itching, sweating and/or nausea.

Keep in mind these dosages are for kratom leaves, which is commonly used, and not extracts that are much more potent. The effects of kratom last about six hours on average with the higher the dose, the longer the effects.

Using Kratom

In Asia , kratom leaves are often chewed fresh. Powdered kratom is usually mixed with juice. In the western world, dried kratom leaves are often mixed with black tea, or other herbal teas. Since kratom has a bitter taste, sugar or honey is usually added to sweeten the taste.

Kratom Guidelines

As with any herb or drug, sensitivity to kratom can vary greatly between individuals so what works for one person might not work the same for you. When starting to use Kratom it's best to start with low doses and increase the dose gradually.

The greatest risk while using kratom is falling asleep. That means never engage in potential hazardous situations while using kratom, because sleepiness may come on without warning, even from a stimulant state. As with any drug use, if you are pregnant or suspect you might be, it's best to forego the use of kratom as a precaution.

Kratom is rarely habit forming but as with any drug (alcohol, caffeine, tobacco) moderation is key. It's important to not use kratom everyday but rather as an occasional treat.

It's recommend that kratom not be combined with cocaine, amphetamine-like drugs, or large doses of caffeine, because of over-stimulation and increased blood pressure. The same is true of depressants such as alcohol, or other drugs with benzodiazepines and opiates.
