Muscaria is a hallucinogen, but while you might be able to group LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, and their ilk into the same category, Amanita brings a wholly different hallucinatory experience to the table. Although the mushroom is full of interesting elements, the major active ingredients are Muscimol and Ibotenic Acid. A. Muscaria is best taken when cooked or dried because the process of decarboxylation turns the less powerful Ibotenic Acid into Muscimol, thereby maximizing potency, and reducing unpleasant side effects. Most hallucinogens create their psychotropic effect by interfering with brain waves. Muscimol, on the other hand, works by putting your brain into a dream-like state, which can make the experience very uncontrolled, but surreal enough to avoid being overly terrifying. Of course, as with all psychedelic substances, your experience will be in large part determined by your state of mind going in to your trip, How to Take Amanita Muscaria: A. Muscaria is traditionally taken orally, in a gel cap or with food. However, it is smokable. For a hard, fast high, some people like to peel the skin off the caps and pipe it, which is safe but not well documented. Because it is an entirely organic compound with varying strength, those trying A. Muscaria for the first time should start slow. Ingest a few grams (3-5), and then wait for at least two hours before upping the dosage. It might be an hour or more before the effects take hold, so be patient. How Amanita Muscaria Will Make You Feel: In small doses, A. Muscaria can be kind of like drinking a few beers. At a party, everyone will be happy, talkative, and relaxed. Individuals seeking to reach another level might be disappointed by these featherweight effects, but this is a great option for casual use. After you've developed a feel for how the mushroom is going to treat you, you can start to increase the amount you ingest. Large quantities will produce intense auditory, olfactory, and tactile sensations. Extreme visual hallucinations are less likely to occur. You will probably feel super-energized, and ready to do lots of running around, so don't plan on a night spent watching Clan of the Cave Bear. Side Effects: Of course, Fly Agaric is not without side effects. As with other hallucinogens, most users experience nausea when taking large amounts. This negative experience can often be avoided by preparing your stomach with a day or two of light eating or even fasting. Muscarine, another of the potent ingredients in Amanita, can also cause the unfortunate side effects of sweating, over-production of saliva, and muscle twitches. To avoid this unpleasantness, traditional Muscaria-using cultures had the tribal shaman ingest the drug, and then the other members of the group would drink the shaman's resulting urine, which is still highly psychotropic, but purified of many toxins. Don't Go it Alone: Urine drinking might not be an option we would consider today. However, it is a good idea to have a shaman-like or, at least, sober individual present to guide and protect you on your first few trips. As with many intense hallucinatory experiences, it can be most beneficial to have someone around reminding you that everything is okay. The final, and most important detail to bear in mind when it comes to Amanita is that it looks a lot like other species in its fungi family that are intensely deadly, such as the appropriately named Death Caps and Destroying Angels. Experiment to your heart's content with this versatile fungus, but be sure to get it from a knowledgeable, reputable source, lest you wind up with trouble much worse than a bad trip. |
